Color Theory's Color Consultation

There are few things more disappointing than spending time picking paint colors only to discover after painting the walls that the color you chose isn't quite right. We know what it's like to stand in front of the wall of endless color at the paint store and feel overwhelmed by all of the choices! With our color consultations, we aim to take all the hassle out of choosing the perfect colors for your home.

Unfortunately, there aren't really any formulas or "sure-fire ways" to pick perfect colors for your home. Lucky for you, though, our color consultants have taken time to really develop and hone their knack for color. Great color is one of the most important aspects of our work (great customer service is the other). Choosing a color for your home is deeply rooted in culture and personal taste, which is why our professional color consultants help sift through the clutter to find a color that is you! And don't worry, our consultants want you to be happy in your home, so they won't impose their favorite colors on you.

Now, you may be wondering what will happen during your color consultation. Well, here are some key points that all good color consultations will cover:

Getting to know you and your home.

Our color consultations begin with a brief tour of your home. We like to get a sense of your style and make sure our color selections fit in with your home's existing decor. We start by asking how you want to feel in your home and how you would like your guests to feel. We ask you about your style and how that translates to your home. Are you more bold and quirky, or quiet and reserved? These types of questions will help us to narrow down our paint selections.

An overview of Color Principles

We also like to talk with you about some of the principles and considerations that may impact the way certain colors work in your home. These principles include, working general to specific, natural vs. artificial lighting (see examples below), connections between colors, warm vs. cool colors, etc.

Finding your Color Preferences

After we have talked about your style and the different color principles, we narrow down your color choices even more by asking about your color preferences. Do you prefer neutral tones or bright saturated colors? Do you prefer light, open colors or dark, bold colors? Maybe you like a little bit of everything. After this part of the consultation, we generally have only a handful of colors to choose between. Doesn't this already seem easier than standing in front of walls of color for hours? We like to think so.

Developing the Color Scheme

Finally, after we have been able to narrow down your color choices, we are ready to build a color scheme. Typically, we start with the largest open space, whether that is a living room, kitchen area, or entryway. We tend to like neutral colors for these larger areas, so the connected rooms can really show personality and pops of color, without being too overwhelming. We will choose your neutral color first, and then choose your supporting and accent colors. We like to use the 60/30/10 Rule when developing this color scheme. This is the idea that 60% of the room should be one color. The 60% is usually the wall color. Then 30% is the supporting color, which can be the furniture, floor coverings, and other sizable items. The last 10% is the accent or "pop" of color. This can be candles, throw pillows, and other smaller items in the room. These pops of color are really what bring the room to life. We call this the 60/30/10 Rule, but we know that some rules are meant to be broken, so if we find that this doesn't apply to you or your home, don't worry. It's not a deal-breaker.

After the Consultation

After we help you pick the perfect colors for your home, we send, via mail, samples of your colors on larger sheets. That makes it easier to see what the colors might look like in different lights and at different times of day. We will give you an estimate for our painters and once we receive your payment for the materials, the paint will be delivered to your doorstep! The real magic happens when our amazing paint crew expertly applies the color, and your home is transformed! You don't even have to worry about cleaning up after us, we take care of all that for you! All you have to do is love your home.
